Biddulphia biddulphianaは単細胞藻類ですが，しばしば肉眼で確認できる大型の群体を作ります。糸状の群体が房状に集まり，岩上や海藻の体上に着生します。褐藻などの海藻（大型海藻）と間違えられることもあります。8月に淡路島田ノ代海岸で観察したときは，磯場の一面を覆いつくすような大群落を形成していました。

兵庫県淡路島の翼港で採泥した海底堆積物からスミアスライドを作製し，被殻の模様を観察したものです。
