肉眼で確認できる大型の群体を作ります。糸状の群体が房状に集まり，岩上や海藻の体上に着生します。褐藻などの海藻（大型海藻）と間違えられることもしばしばです。8月に淡路島田ノ代海岸で観察したときは，一面を覆いつくすような大群落を形成していました。

採泥した海底堆積物を排水パイプ用洗浄液で処理したものです。
