| リュウノタマ（Acrothamnion preissii）は，ヒラクサ（Ptilophora subcostata）の体上に着生することで知られている紅藻です。「龍は玉を抱く」と言います。水墨画などで龍が玉をつかんでいる姿を想像してください。リュウノタマは，枝（有限生長枝）の先端部に腺細胞という特別な細胞を形成します。この様子を「龍が抱く玉」に例え，「リュウノタマ」と名付けられました。規則正しく対生する小枝に囲まれるようにして形成される腺細胞，「龍の玉」とは実に優雅な和名です。
今回の顕微鏡写真は押し葉標本を水に戻して撮影したものなので，色素体の形態や色が生時とはやや異なります。機会があれば生のサンプルを観察したいと思います。 |
