アマゾン川に生息しています。Symphysodon aequifasciataは体色の違いを基にS. a. aequifasciata, S. a. axelrodi, S. a. harardiの３つの亜種に分けられており，撮影したものはブルーディスカス（S. a. harardi）あるいはブラウンディスカス（S. a. axelrodi）に相当すると思います。しかし，S. aequifasciataの亜種は分類学的な問題と，遺伝子解析において明確に分けられないことから現在は認められていないようです（Ready et al. 2006など）。単に「ディスカス」と呼ばれることも多いと思いますが，「ディスカス」には，S. aequifasciataの他にもS. discusとS. tarzooが含まれるため，本サイトでは「ディスカスの仲間」としました。
