淡路島の干潟で行われた臨海実習で採集されたマハゼの幼魚です。採集後，水槽に入れておいたのですが，数時間後，同じ水槽に入れておいたアナハゼ属の幼魚に頭から丸のみにされておりました。アナハゼの仲間と他の魚を同じ水槽に入れてはいけないという教訓になりました。

内湾域から河川の河口域に生息し，海水域～汽水域に生息する種類です。淡水域にも入ることがあるそうで，若い頃，江戸川放水路などでハゼ釣りをした際，河口部から割と遡上したところでも釣れた思い出があります。
