クロホシイシモチ（Apogon notatus）に良く似ていますが，エラの上に黒点がないことなどで区別されます。スノーケリングで海藻採集をしていると良く見かける魚です。著者は本州温帯域を主なフィールドにしているので，大半は本種だと思いますが，クロホシイシモチを見間違えている可能性も高いと思います。フィールドではっきりと区別できるようになりたいものです。
