河川の中・下流域に生息しています。チチブ（Tridentiger obscurus）に近似しますが，チチブと比べて頭部の白点がまばらに分布することなどで区別されます。淡水域に生息していますが，両側回遊魚としても知られていて，チチブとは生息域や生態も異なっているそうです。
