外見がカサゴ（Sebastiscus marmoratus）にそっくりで，正直なところ何が違うのか良く分かっていなかったのですが，水族館の展示で「胸鰭が丸い」，「背鰭の棘数が13」という特徴で区別されることを知りました。カサゴは，「胸鰭の上半部が湾入している」，「背鰭の棘数が12」という違いがあるそうです。
