見た目に反してと言ってよいかは分かりませんが，大層獰猛な魚で，自分と大して変わらない大きさの魚に喰らいつく様には驚かされます。兵庫県竹野でスノーケリングをしながらカタクチイワシ（Engraulis japonicus）の群れを眺めていた時，ヤツマタモク（Sargassum patens）の海中林の中から本種が飛び出してきて，カタクチイワシに喰らいつきました。暴れるカタクチイワシを咥えて，ゆっくりと沈んでいく様を動画に撮ったものの，離れていて良く分からない映像になってしまいました。生き物の撮影は難しいと思いました。
